Blizzard: "No LAN in StarCraft2." (PC)

Starcraft2

One of the major component of the original StarCraft game - LAN play will not included into StarCraft2; and Blizzard confirmed that. Battle.net is the only channel for multi-playing online, and Blizzard gonna boost more features into it. Here's the official words:

"We don't currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we're encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We're looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future."

Multi-platform Game Quality

Photobucket

Today, gamers have a wide choice of gaming platform to choose from; either you prefer to play at home or on the go, there is something for everyone. As for the game developers, to assure that their games are able to reach every single gamers from any platforms (or to own a fair share from the juicy-market); here goes the trend of Multi-platform games.

According to the analysis, every single multi-platform game released in North America this generation has sold in higher numbers on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Although Sony's PS3 has an impressive line-up of first party exclusives announced during E3 2009 or titles which already in shelves, such as the recent INFAMOUS, it only hit a low 175,900 copies sold. Clearly, first-party exclusive games are not enough to carry Sony's hardware, and lower multi-platform sales mean that third-party developers are likely to prioritize development on the more lucrative Xbox 360.

Photobucket
Bioshock for PS3

Weak sales are matched in many cases by weak technical performance, Sony's console is facing technical performance problem (besides high price tag and their marketing strategy) ever since it launched: frame rate, anti-aliasing, texture quality, screen tear, resolution numbers and etc., all these factors have been haunting most multi-platform titles on PS3 until today. Gamesites do comparison to every multi-platform titles with the result of PS3 version always inferior to Xbox360.

Since both consoles share the common nature of hardcore gaming in this generation, when any title hitting multi-platform, comparison in any aspects will conclude which version to GET (if you have both consoles). Unless you only have one, then you won't have any problem choosing and you don't give a shit of how's the quality looks like. IF you do MIND, then you will be very pissed that you own an inferior version.

Final Fantasy 13 and Metal Gear Solid Rising announced heading to Xbox360 and really a shocking surprise, the franchise which used to be exclusive on Sony's console. I'm sure there will be a lot of "What If" when they hit the shelves.

Photobucket
Lost Planet for PS3

Last week by Activision chief Robert Kotick, who threatened to drop development plans for the Playstation 3 if Sony didn't improve developer relations in 2010:

"I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform," he told the Times of London. "It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation."

The reason that Microsoft's console is doing so well in multi-platform titles and with superior quality, besides "friendly" technical environment for developers (like window environment, I believe), where developers are able to adapt and allocate more effort to other challenging areas. They are having a very impressive marketing strategies and the MOST attractive part - EXCLUSIVE DLC add on. With these advantages, Xbox360 simply gain the high ground as the preferred platform for third-party software sales.

Sony really needs wise solutions to turn the tide, exclusive titles is NOT everything! Multi-platform titles do the most fight in the US market and even other regions:

1) IF it is true that the console is so HARD to develop, Sony should provide assistance closely with the developers to ease up the technical difficulties; to assure the end result is up to the level.

2) Seek for more exclusive DLC and early release dates for multi-platform titles.

3) Improve the marketing and advertising channels to promote third party titles.

Personally I do wish that PS3 able to have some improvement and regain some ground, do not end up the 10 years console life span becomes a 10 years suffering.

SNES PC?

Photobucket

The SNES you see above, is no SNES at all. It is, in fact, a fully functioning PC (an Acer Aspire One netbook). Built by quangDX and DuPPs of Asobitech.com, the AASNES1 packs all the connections you need, WiFi and even some cool USB extension cables that plug directly into the console's controller ports (its makers also modified a Super NES controller to work as a USB controller). The DVD-RW drive is located inside the Super Mario World cartridge and the modders even made the Super Nintendo logo on the back light up.

Check out a video of the AASNES1 after the break and head over to Asobitech for a step-by-step retelling of its creation.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Delayed (PSN, XBLA)

Photobucket

I have downloaded the demo from PSN, and I really disappointed the graphic result, especially those nonsense filter effects to cover up the jaggie sprites. I rather play the Sega Dreamcast version.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has been delayed until late July at the earliest. The upcoming Playstation Network/Xbox Live Arcade port of the classic 2D fighting game was originally scheduled for a late June release. Capcom posted the following message from their official Twitter:

“No official release date for MVC2 as of yet. Digital release dates can be tricky. Do not expect before end of July, tho.”

Capcom: Breath Of Fire “Remains A Resting IP”

Photobucket

This is a sad news for Breath of Fire fans, Capcom decides to put their well-known RPG into stasis for this time being. The last main game in the series was Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (considered the 5th BOF), which was released in 2003. Seems we are not going to see a new one for sometime.

Chris Svensson, the Corporate Officer/Vice President of Strategic Planning & Business Development for Capcom, left the following message on the company’s official forum:

“I wish I had better news to deliver but BOF remains a ‘Resting’ IP for Capcom at the moment. I too would like to see a revival some day.”

Metal Gear Announcement (PS3, PSN)

Konami made a few interesting announcement for the MGS series, nothing major but some additional topping:

1) Metal Gear Solid 4 The Greatest Hits edition

2) Metal Gear Solid Classic PSOne on PSN for $9.99

3) Metal Gear Online Shadow Moses Map Released

The latest content will be available to players who have purchased the SCENE Expansion Pack. The download allows players to use Old Snake as a unique character and the Octo-cam suit as a weapon. However, Old Snake will not become completely invisible when using the suit, but will automatically blend with the environment.

The latest download will also include an Auto Matching Reward mode in which the winner of the match wins more reward points than normal. When playing an individual match in this mode, only the winner receives the reward points while in a team match, the team member ranked first will win the reward points.

Konami has also opened the Rookie Campaign in MGO. During the campaign, players who register a new account (Status determined based on PS3 hardware ID) will be rewarded 5,000 reward points which you can use to purchase in-game gear. In addition, Rookies will also get a free copy of Codec Pack 1, which adds various in-game communication features to coordinate with other players.

Photobucket

The Street Fighter IV PC Benchmark program has gone live, I'm sure SF4 fans who want to play this game on PC dying to know whether their PC really up to d level to handle this game. No fear, before you invest your hard earned money into this blockbuster title, get this program to have a test drive on your PC.

Click this link to download the benchmarking software. Although it is a Japanese site, just scroll down until you see a big rectangle buttons with the first one stated the file size "396 MB (416,215,084 バイト)"; others are mirrors. Unzip it and install, then it will do the job.

I tested on my PC at home, I did run a few test in slightly different setting, the following are the results:

1) TEST RESULT GRADE: A

SCORE: 9137
AVERAGE: 64.52FPS
OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz

Frame Rate: Variable
Parallel Rendering: ON
Texture Filter: Default
Model Quality: High
BG Quality: High
Soft Shadow: High
Self Shadow: High
Motion Blur: High
Particles: High
Extra Touch: OFF

Remarks:
I believe the FRAME RATE setting is variable, it is not locked in a specific rate, thus it end up rapidly fast like fast forwarding. (correct me if I'm wrong in technical terms)

2) TEST RESULT GRADE: D

SCORE: 5685
AVERAGE: 37.78FPS
OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: 2046MB

3) TEST RESULT GRADE: B

SCORE: 8404
AVERAGE: 54.53FPS
OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: 2046MB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
Display Setting: 1280x720 60Hz

Antialiasing: OFF
Full Screen: ON

Frame Rate: Variable
Parallel Rendering: ON
Texture Filter: Default
Model Quality: High
BG Quality: High
Soft Shadow: High
Self Shadow: High
Motion Blur: High
Particles: High
Extra Touch: OFF

Remarks:
Acceptable framerate, it plays like average speed and everything sync well.

4) TEST RESULT GRADE: D
SCORE: 5799
AVERAGE: 39.73FPS
OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: 2046MB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
Display Setting: 1280x720 60Hz

Antialiasing: 2xAA
Full Screen: ON
V-Synch : OFF
Frame Rate: Variable
Parallel Rendering: ON
Texture Filter: Default
Model Quality: High
BG Quality: High
Soft Shadow: High
Self Shadow: High
Motion Blur: High
Particles: High
Extra Touch: OFF

Remarks:
Slow MOOOoooooooo

Conclusion:
Base on what I have (PC spec), without sacrificing most of the graphic setting and maintain the gaming performance, tweaking the Anti-Aliasing and V-sync are the only options I have. But even without AA, it is still acceptable due to the graphic quality is much more higher than console version. At least it is fine for me.

Scribblenauts (NDS)

ScribbleNauts

Scribblenauts is an innovative puzzle platformer developed by 5th Cell, a studio with a history of charming and creativity-driven DS games like Lock's Quest and Drawn to Life.

In this game, you guide a kid named Maxwell in the game world, to conquer the obstacles that lie before you, which consists of 220 increasingly difficult levels. Think of a solution (object or stuff) and type (or write) it on the touch screen and then the object will appear in the game; then you use it to solve the problems.

With tens of thousands of objects in the game, it's awfully hard to think of something that the game doesn't have in it. The objects you call out can even interact to each other, like creating a fighter and a shotgun, you can make the fighter uses the shotgun to do your bidding. COOL!

Metal Gear Arcade - Japanese Debut Trailer (Arcade)

Metal Gear Arcade is just an arcade version of Metal Gear Online. In addition to a full 5.1 channel arcade cabinet and the type of exclusive control setup one would expect of an arcade game, Metal Gear Arcade's biggest draw could be its use of 3D. When playing the game, you're put on a pair of 3D glasses that's attached to the cabinet.

At the official site, Konami provided a sampling of what the 3D might look like. These shots are just meant to be a demo. The real version uses a different technique for getting its 3D effect.

More information on Metal Gear Arcade can be found in this week's Famitsu, which features an interview with MGO producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana and MGA producer Satoshi Uchiyama.

The two state that MGA will be just like MGO, but with "plus alpha" content. Outside of the 3D support and new control interface, the staff aims to give the new version more customization options over MGO. The game will also add a "ranking" feature which describes your character level and will be used as a basis for matching.

While the arcade unit shows cabinets linked together, MGA is also playable online using Konami's online arcade network. The game will support up to 16 players, with the CPU stepping up to fill in blanks.

Outside of the online team-based combat, the game will also offer a mission-based mode. This can be played solo or in co-op.

Metal Gear Arcade hits game centers later this year.

Prototype - Gametrailers Review (PC, PS3, Xbox360)

Ever since the release days ago, there are a lot of controversies of whether this game is really a damn good or shitty. The most mentioned down sides are the bland environment, especially you look from the top of the whole city; over chaotic fight scene, and etc.

Though I haven't try the game YET (gonna be), by just looking at the videos, it is still fun to play with. The bloody violent battle, fast pace... damn I love to throw a car to the military chopper; it is still very satisfying.

I'm playing INFAMOUS now, it is hard to compare both of these sandbox games, and I don't want to either. Well, hopefully I will get one for myself soon (damn I'm gonna broke).

Metal Gear Solid: Rising won’t use MGS4 Engine (PC, PS3, Xbox360)

Kojima production sure aims for multi-platform development, by building up a new multi-console engine, no doubts that most of the future Kojima games will hit all consoles.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising won’t be using the same engine as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Instead, Kojima Productions is building a multiplatform one from scratch to support the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Despite some initial concerns, they assure their fans that the multiplatform development won’t compromise the game in their latest podcast. In fact, Kojima Productions even promise that Metal Gear Solid: Rising will end up looking better than Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

No really, as the mag reports that Metal Gear Arcade will be played sitting down while wearing 3D glasses and using a "special controller that allows for separate movement and viewpoint controls." PS3 Prototype Installation Issue

Any PS3 owners who play Prototype encounter this problems? Check the post by the dev team below:

It has come to our attention that a small number of PS3 Prototype owners have been having issues with installing the game. This is a known issue and there will be a patch released on PSN shortly (details to follow).

If your PS3 tells you that you have insufficient hard drive space to install, even if you do, you are going to need to change the available space on your hard drive by 700 MB. This can be done in a number of ways including the following:

- Installing or uninstalling another PS3 game that allows hard drive installation.
- Downloading game demos.
- Removing downloadable content.
- Adding / removing MP3's or movies from the hard drive.
- Etc.

Once you have made the necessary change to your Hard Drive space insert the Prototype disc back into your PS3 and it should now install.

The goal of this is to change the available space on the hard drive. You may need to try a combination of any of the above suggestions.

We take this issue very seriously and are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks for your patience!

- Team Prototype

Split/Second (PS3. Xbox360)

Black Rock Studio did a very good job in PURE (Off-road ATV racer); now their new Racer title - Split/Second will aim to be BurnOut liked, with additional environmental destruction which will cause you some DISTURBANCE while in the race track.

The destructive elements jeopardizing the race is a Sweetie-Add-On, it is boring to just hit the gas and reach the checked flag. On the race track, you have to keep your eyes on things happen around you, or else you will be hit by a plane (no kidding).

I love the in-game HUD attached on the car, the Laps stats, position, and other gauge indicators; thus you see no HUD on screen. After looking at the trailer and gameplay videos, I consider this is my another most anticipating racing game after Burnout Paradise. Hopefully there will be a demo soon.

Photobucket

The bundle is so cool!

Not only will a new black Wii be out in Japan this summer, prospective owners will have the option of buying it in a bundle with what will undoubtedly be 2009's biggest game for that region: Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 (Tri).

The Monster Hunter 3 bundle will be released on August 1, concurrent with the standalone version of the game, and will include the game, a black system, and a black Classic Controller Pro for 33,000 yen ($342). In addition, a black version of the MH3/Classic Controller Pro bundle will be sold for 8,490 yen ($88).

DsiWare - Six-in-one Translator (NDSi)

Photobucket

A very handy and interesting dictionary application for DSi, the cool part is the camera shoot any words then can be recognized and translated. It exclusively on NDSi only.

Translator is a neat little application. It's got a huge dictionary of words from six languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian and German. You can enter in a word from one of those languages and find its definition in the other five -- but the impressive thing about it is the input method. Aside from the keyboard and handwriting methods you've seen before on Nintendo's handheld, you can use the DSi camera to take a picture of text you wish to translate, crop the image around the word using the stylus, then see it in five other languages.

Kojima Productions announces Metal Gear Arcade

Photobucket

Metal Gear franchise is really spinning off to multiple platform. We do wish to see more details and screenshots.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima revealed Metal Gear Arcade, which is an arcade game. According to Kojima, it's a reworked, networked version of Metal Gear Online designed to be played in stereoscopic 3D using special glasses.

Kojima told the audience at Konami's E3 press conference that the Japanese version of MGA is being worked on first, implying that a Western release will indeed see the light of day. Kojima is set to reveal more details on the rest of his studio's titles in development shortly.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow E3 09 Debut Trailer

Photobucket

The next Castlevania isn't being made by series legend Koji Igarashi -- it's coming from Metal Gear masters Kojima Productions. The game teased as "MASK" on the developer's E3 countdown site is, in reality, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The game is under development at MercurySteam Entertainment, the studio behind American McGee's Scrapland and Clive Barker's Jericho, teaming up with Kojima Productions.

There's already some Hollywood talent attached, including British actor Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Kojima is not directly producing the game; rather, he's there to "support" MercurySteam on the game, which is slated for 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy XIV Online - E3 09 Debut Trailer (PS3)

Looks like the PlayStation 3 is getting a double dose of Final Fantasy next year, as Sony reveals a new online Final Fantasy XIV for the PlayStation 3. Yes, XIV.

A complete and utter surprise to the entire audience, Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to the PlayStation 3 exclusively next year, assumedly after Final Fantasy XIII is released. A brief trailer was shown which looked very much like Final Fantasy XI, with the text "A new online epic begins."

So it sounds like an exclusive, massively multiplayer online game for the PlayStation 3. We'll have more as soon as there is more to have!

Update: Note that FInal Fantasy XIV is console exclusive to the PlayStation 3, with the PC also getting a version.

Gran Turismo 5 & Gran Turismo PSP - E3 2009 Trailer (PS3, PSP)

Gran Turismo 5:

Gran Turismo PSP:

Bastard GT5, you make us waiting for so darn long!

Hot on the heels of the PSP Go announcement, Sony also tells us at E3 that Gran Turismo may finally see release on the system. They say that even though the game will be on the tiny system, it will be packed with content: 800 cars to race around on 35 tracks with multiple variations that actually allow for 60 different race route. In singleplayer, you'll be able to run singleplayer time trials, and there will also be a mode to help your driving improve. Multiplayer will bring ad hoc four player racing as well as the ability to trade cars back and forth with your friends.

The game will release on October 1, right alongside the new PSP system.

Project Natal E3 09: Xbox360 Motion Controller (Xbox360)

Photobucket

A new innovative gaming experience developed by Microsoft, it is a answer to the Wii remote.

Microsoft finally took the wraps off the that rumored motion controller we'd been hearing about. Apparently the small, black device -- codenamed "Natal" -- will allow for an astoundingly wide range of actions by utilizing a group of sensors (the box itself sits beneath your TV), and the accessory will be capable of juggling multiple users during a single session. The demo Microsoft showed off included a skateboarding game (replete with a young man "air" ollie-ing), and a family playing a racing game (the dad was changing a tire, the daughter driving).

The add-on will offer features such as auto sign-in for players to Xbox Live (based on complex facial recognition), and sports extremely detailed body tracking which will be able to follow the individual movements of separate limbs. During the press event, the company demoed a painting app, which lets you use your entire body to handle virtual painting supplies, allowing you to do things like throw buckets of paint onto a canvas. Another title was shown off which featured a woman interacting with a young boy on the screen -- one of the company's creepier demos in recent memory. Unfortunately for us, Microsoft says the device won't be released during 2009.

Halo 3 ODST priced, collector's pack revealed

Photobucket

Halo 3: ODST will release on September 22 for $60. There will also be a "Halo 3: ODST Collector's Pack" priced at $100, which will also include a rather attractive special edition controller.

The justification for the full price is the additional Firefight (which is like Gears' "Horde" or L4D's "Survival) multiplayer modes, the entire Halo 3 map pack series and the Halo: Reach beta. Looks like ODST is using the Crackdown gambit, having customers pay for the Reach beta and getting that other game for free.
